O século XXI ainda é uma criança mas já produziu filmes suficientemente marcantes para ter direito a um top 100. A iniciativa partiu da emissora pública britânica BBC, que sondou 177 críticos, académicos e curadores de 36 países diferentes com o objectivo de compilar uma lista internacional dos cem melhores filmes realizados um pouco por todo o planeta desde o ano 2000.
A encabeçar a lista, surpreendentemente ou não tanto, está o mestre do surreal David Lynch, com o seu perturbador mas inesquecível Mulholland Drive (2001). Seguem-se-lhe o chinês In the Mood for Love (2000), de Wong Kar-wai, There Will be Blood (2007), do americano Paul Thomas Anderson e o filme de animação japonês Spirited Away (2001), de Hayao Miyazaki. Interessante é constatar que nenhuma destas três longa-metragens ganhou o Oscar para melhor filme no ano em que concorreu, contribuindo com mais um argumento para a causa dos que descredibilizam as escolhas anuais da Academia.
Richard Linklater (Boyhood), Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) e os irmãos Coen (No Country for Old Men) são outros dos nomes que mereceram um lugar no top 10 desta lista, sendo que apenas os últimos conseguiram colocar dois filmes no top 20 (Inside Llewyn Davis ocupa a décima primeira posição).
É de notar que, entre os especialistas consultados, quase metade são de nacionalidade americana e dois terços são homens. Foram escolhidos representantes de publicações periódicas respeitadas, como as revistas The New Yorker e Variety, bem como o jornal francês Le Monde e a plataforma de jornalismo digital IndieWire. O processo envolvia que cada um classificasse os seus dez filmes favoritos, responsabilizando-se a BBC por ordenar as longa-metragens de acordo com o número de votos.
